Note: Formally known as the Rex Shunt Specialist list, I have changed the name to reflect a wider array of surgeons and the various surgical methods currently available to correct or lessen the severity of portal hypertension. It is my hope that others will find a specialist to help them no matter where they live, and share those victories with others. On that note if you have a story to share regarding a surgery you have had, please consider posting this for the benefit of others. Please also note that if you know of another surgeon or specialist that has helped you, please post their contact information below stating the doctors name, contact information including phone number or email address or let me know personally. I endeavour to keep your personal information private, and at the very least use your first name only. Thank you so much!
Pleased to announce an updated list (November 2018) of gastroenterologists specializing and not restricted to performing the Rex Shunt Procedure for portal hypertension. (This most recent addition includes the country of Chile, which is the first for South America). Since starting this blog in 2009 I have collected these names from subscribers to this blog and other various sources.
Due to high interest in the Rex Shunt Procedure I have updated this list from a regular post to a “page” with a tab at the top of my homepage for easy access. If there are any specialists I have missed, or you know of any changes to the contact information, please let me know and I can easily revise the file.

Any Doctor in South Africa doing this procedure?
Hi Renette,
I’m sorry for the delayed response. I upgraded my settings and all responses get sent to my spam box. A reminder to me to be checking more frequently for replies directly on my blog! Anyways I don’t have anyone listed on my specialists page for South Africa yet. I am hoping through this reply at the very least someone will be able to provide a name of a specialist in your country. If not I would inquire via gastroenterology departments at the major hospitals and especially teaching hospitals in South Africa or even the African continent.
Dear sir,
My daughter was diagnosed with EHPVO, now there is no bleeding, observed splenomegaly, If we want to go for surgery, Kindly suggest me in India who are Rex Shunt Specialist Lists, I am from India. Because we are not affordable such a big amount in US or UK as we are lower middle class family sir.
Kindly do needful.
Thanks
Madhusudhan Reddy

Dear Madhusudhan,
Unfortunately I do not know of anyone in your country who can help you. I would suggest though, that you contact a liver specialist in the U.K. to see if they can recommend someone in your country who may be able to help you. Please refer to the rex shunt specialist list I have complied on my blog page and I would recommend you first try the doctors listed in the UK and then contact the closest specialists to India frkm surrounding countries. https://www.portal-hypertension.com/rex-shunt-specialist-list/
Wishing you all the best and hopefully you can find the help you need for your daughter. Clint
Is there any surgeons in Leeds UK?
Hello Allanah,
Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately I do not know of any specialists in Leeds, but I would suggest you contact any one of the few doctors in the UK that I have listed on the post and hopefully they can refer you to someone in your region. See:https://www.portal-hypertension.com/rex-shunt-specialist-list/
Wishing you all the best in your search. If you have any other questions I would be happy to assist you if I can.
Clint
Hello
Could you advise me if there is a rex shunt specialist in Spain.
Kind regards
Susan
Hi Susan,
I am sorry I completely missed your post as it went into my spam folder for some reason. Anyways I do not know of any doctors in Spain who perform the procedure, but maybe you have found an answer to that question already? Have a look at the list I compiled for Rex Shunt Specialists and maybe see who is closest and contact their respective offices for a reply. Again I apologize for missing this post. If there is anything else I can help with please let me know. Happy New Year! Clint
Hello. Is there a way to way out how many successful Rex shunts the doctors on the list have completed? Or who else is good besides Superina?
Good Day, Thank you for your response. The procedure is performed around the world, but to what scale I do not have the numbers for. My guess, and I stand corrected, is that Dr. Superina in Chicago has performed between 300 or more of this procedure. Depending on your geographical location you can look at the list and possibly contact anyone of those surgeons through their respective hospitals. I had another doctor’s name in Pittsburgh come up via another Facebook blog I belong to and maybe that is another option. I will contact the administrator of the blog called “Portal Hypertension and Portal Vein Thrombosis in Children and Adults” and ask her to add your name. It is a very comprehensive page, and many parents of children offer their advice and experience regarding the condition. If you have any further questions – please don’t hesistate to contact me here. Clint
