*UPDATE* Portal Hypertension Global Specialist List

specialistsNote: Formally known as the Rex Shunt Specialist list, I have changed the name to reflect a wider array of surgeons and the various surgical methods currently available to correct or lessen the severity of portal hypertension.  It is my hope that others will find a specialist to help them no matter where they live, and share those victories with others.  On that note if you have a story to share regarding a surgery you have had, please consider posting this for the benefit of others.  Please also note that if you know of another surgeon or specialist that has helped you, please post their contact information below stating the doctors name, contact information including phone number or email address or let me know personally.  I endeavour to keep your personal information private, and at the very least use your first name only.  Thank you so much!

Pleased to announce an updated list (November 2018) of gastroenterologists specializing and not restricted to  performing the Rex Shunt Procedure for portal hypertension.  (This most recent addition includes the country of Chile, which is the first for South America).  Since starting this blog in 2009 I have collected these names from subscribers to this blog and other various sources.

Due to high interest in the Rex Shunt Procedure I have updated this list from a regular post to a “page” with a tab at the top of my homepage for easy access.  If there are any specialists I have missed, or you know of any changes to the contact information, please let me know and I can easily revise the file.

Click specialist’s name for a direct link to website (where applicable).

Her name is Dr. Orloff. She does PV procedures….not 100% sure she’s done Rex Shunt, but I wouldn’t be surprised. My daughter was diagnosed with PVT when she was six years old and she gets all her care and follow up at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at OHSU. Currently she is being monitored for PVH and receives excellent care from her GI doctor who is a liver/thrombosis specialist. It’s quite a story I want to share with your community someday.

      Hi Kristi,

Thanks for this information. I will add Dr. Orloff’s name to that list. It would be great to hear your daughter’s story when you share it.

      Take care,

      Clint

Dr. Sukru Emre at Yale, new haven CT. He has done them and would have done my daughters but clots inside the liver meant she cannot get Rex. So she will be having distal mesorenal shunt this month.

Hi Patty, Thanks for the this valuable information! I am about to update that post, as I have a few more specialists to add to that list. That list is growing as the expertise gets passed on to others. If you haven’t already discovered this, here is another Facebook page that may be helpful to you if you would like to look it up: Portal Vein Thrombosis & Portal Hypertension in Children and Adults I am a member of this blog and there is wonderful support and information on it for folks with children diagnosed with PH. I hope and pray all the best for your daughter. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask me. Best, Clint

        Hi Clint
we emailed before. Now my daughter has had complications and I’m looking for a hepatologist for a second opinion. She currently sees Dr. Emre (surg), Dr. Emerick (GI). Any word on hepatologists in Boston area?
        thanks

          Hi Patty,

You may have found someone by now and it may be too late, but I am sincerely sorry I missed seeing your post until today! Unfortunately I didn’t receive notification via email that you had even asked a question. In answer to your question regarding hepatologists in the Boston area I have no information. The only thing I can suggest is you contact either one of the following specialists outside of your area to see if maybe they could advise you or refer you to someone in the Boston area.

In the narrow specifics of portal hypertension, these doctors come highly recommended and may be able to find you the help you require?

Needing a surgeon to correct shunt which is no longer anchored or in abdominal cavity. Much discomfort. Neurosurgeon “doesn’t do anything from the neck down. “. OKC area preferably.

Hello, Thank you for your submission. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you. I will update my page with your information. Any further comments from your professional perspective is most welcome. I would be interested to know how many surgeries you have performed to date, and whether or not you have treated patients outside of Chile? I don’t have much information from readers or the medical profession of the commonality of portal hypertension in South America so it would be very appreciated. Best regards, Clint
